Private Shared Care Agreements

Each GP practice is an independent business contracted by the Health Board, and prescribing policies can therefore differ between practices. Our policy follows the national guidance issued by the All Wales Medicines and Safety Group, which advises against entering into shared-care agreements with private providers. The reason for this is that we cannot be certain that ongoing monitoring will continue, which would invalidate the shared-care arrangement and transfer full clinical responsibility to the practice. This is not clinically safe.

The practice fully understands that private providers are often used because of long NHS waiting times; however,  medication advised by private providers must continue to be issued privately until the patient is seen within the NHS. This applies to all shared care agreements for all medications and conditions.
