September is Spot Leukaemia month. Research carried out by Leukaemia Care and Leukaemia UK has found that only 14% of the UK population can name the main symptoms of leukaemia. The Spot Leukaemia campaign aims to address this.
Dr Smith is part of Leukaemia Care’s GP advisory panel and also a trustee for the charity. Last month Dr Smith and her daughter recorded 2 podcasts for Leukaemia Care that are being advertised on Boom Radio (there are 2 shorter one-minute ads that go out on air). One is to help people identify symptoms and the other is how to advocate for a full blood count via the GP (to increase the number of cases found early and to reduce the number of people being diagnosed in extremis in A&E).
